A Dallas attic in July can get hot enough to cook shingles from the underside, and a roof without proper airflow ages faster than one that can actually breathe. Exhaust at the ridge only works if there is enough intake at the soffit to pull fresh air through, and a lot of roofs have plenty of ridge vent or turbines but not nearly enough intake, which means the exhaust vents are just pulling air from each other instead of the attic.
Bad ventilation shows up two ways. In summer it means trapped heat baking the shingles and underlayment from below, shortening their life regardless of how good the material was. In winter, it can mean trapped moisture condensing in the attic, which leads to mold and rotted decking over time in a way that has nothing to do with the roof surface at all.
The best time to fix any of this is while the roof is already open for a repair or replacement, since that is when adding proper intake, upgrading underlayment, or swapping to a better vent type costs the least extra effort.
