North Texas sits in a stretch of the country that gets hit hard by spring hail, and hail damage does not always look dramatic from the driveway. A shingle can take a hard hit, bruise, and lose granules without a single piece cracking off, and that bruised spot is where water will start working its way in over the following months.
After a storm we get on the roof and check for granule loss, soft spots, and cracked mat under the shingle surface, and we photograph everything with measurements so the damage is documented the way an insurance company expects to see it. We also check the easy ground level indicators, dents on gutters, downspouts, and the fins on an outdoor AC unit, since those often tell you the hail size before you ever climb a ladder.
What we will not do is tell you that you need a full replacement when the damage does not support it. If the roof only needs a handful of shingles repaired, that is what we will put in writing.
